Commissioned

Commissioned. Just what does that mean? It means to be appointed, authorized, and assigned.

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your father which is in heaven” Matthew 5:16 (KJV)

What Believers Are Sent to Do

Believers were not told to simply invite others to church. Rather, they were commissioned to intentionally go into challenging spaces, where the enemy lives, and shine. God has sent us to actively be the change within the world’s culture. Our purpose is not to save everyone; that is not possible. Instead, our clear invitation is to make disciples who, like Jesus, actively demonstrate His way of living on earth.

“And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” Matthew 28:18-20 (KJV)

The culture of the world is to lie, steal, cheat, degrade, use, ostracize, blame, and be filled with anger and vengeance. It is every stance that presents itself as the opposite of the Word of God. (You have heard it said…but the kingdom is like this instead see Matthew 5:17-48). Those who follow Jesus stand out to the world. They oppose what the world believes is true, and the world cannot understand why, because it does not know Jesus Christ.

What Being Commissioned Looks Like in Daily Life

Too often, Christians try to “talk” others into the kingdom without first reflecting on themselves and removing their own beams. However, that is not what we were asked to do. Instead, we were asked to be disciples and go shine. Jesus tells us to go out and make a disciplined people who can be commissioned, that is, intentionally sent with purpose into the world’s systems, whether in the factory down the street, the banking system, healthcare, real estate, agriculture, technology, or anywhere else. In these places, commissioned believers are supposed to shine and show, one person at a time, what a life of service to the Lord looks like.

How pleasing is it to the Lord when someone comes up to you and asks what you do to remain calm when others do not, to speak with authority without anger, or to keep a smile on your face when they see you? Those fruits of the Spirit which glorify Him are being read by others simply by following Christ, walking in faith, and accepting your commission in whatever field He asks you to tend.

To be commissioned is to be sent with purpose, authority, and responsibility. Jesus did not call His people to retreat from the world, but to walk into it carrying His light, His truth, and His character. Whether in quiet faithfulness or visible leadership, every believer has been placed somewhere to reflect the heart of Christ. The call is not merely to speak about Him, but to live in such a way that others are drawn to glorify the Father. Accept your commission by intentionally reflecting Christ every day, and let your life preach what your lips profess.
