Angelic Bubble Wrap: How I Survived Against the Odds

Glory Story Testimonial: James Huber

If you’ve ever moved before, you know the familiar sounds of bubble wrap. We trust it to protect our family heirlooms, our fragile treasures, and photos, wrapping them tightly, hoping they’ll reach their new destination safely. Over the years, I’ve packed up more boxes than I can count. I am so grateful for the many rolls of bubble wrap that have always done their job. Then, an event occurred that made me wonder: Does God use bubble wrap? What would He need it for in heaven, where nothing can break?

The Bible says something remarkable about God’s own kind of protection. Luke 4:10–11 (NIV) promises, “He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.” Psalm 91:11 (NIV) echoes this with, “For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.”

Maybe God doesn’t use bubble wrap, but I’m convinced He wraps us in something even better—angelic protection.

Let me tell you why I believe this. On June 3, 2026, in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, I learned firsthand what it means to be surrounded by God’s angels.

It was a normal afternoon. My wife, Debbie, our daughter, Jill, and Jill’s service dog, Bailey, and I were out together. We waited at the crosswalk and legally obeyed the signals. When the light flashed “walk,” I stepped out first. But for some reason, I hesitated–just a few seconds of pause that I really can’t explain.

Suddenly, everything about this normal and uneventful day changed. A Silverado pickup, driven by a young teenage boy, made a quick turn directly into the crosswalk. He was going about 20–25 mph, and before I could react, the truck barreled straight into me. I remember seeing the grille just inches from my chest. I threw up my hands, and then the world went dark.

The next thing I knew, I was on my back lying on the asphalt. Debbie was by my side; her voice was quite calm but urgent. She said, “Don’t move. Just stay calm.” I looked up and remembered hearing sirens wailing in the distance. Finally, the paramedics arrived and placed me on a backboard, sliding a neck brace around my head. The event left my mind foggy, and my body aching as they loaded me into the ambulance.

At the trauma center, doctors raced to check me for broken bones and internal injuries. They worried about my feet—the truck had run over them both. There was concern for my spine, my shoulder, and my collarbone. Over two days, they scanned me from head to toe: X-rays, CT scans, MRIs. Miraculously, nothing was broken. My spine was safe. The neck brace came off, and I was able to stand, to walk, and finally shower.

didn’t leave the hospital unscathed. My feet were bruised and sore. The bumper had hyper extended my knees. Cuts, bruises, pinched nerves, and a concussion reminded me just how close I’d come to disaster. But against all odds, two days after that accident, I walked out of the hospital on my own, with just restrictions on my activities.

So how did I survive? How did I avoid broken bones, internal bleeding, or worse? I believe it was God’s “angelic bubble wrap.” I believe He sent His angels to surround me, to cushion the blow when I needed it most.

Sometimes, God’s protection doesn’t look anything like what we would expect. It may not be visible, nor immediately understood. It may not prevent every bruise or scrape, and it may be complicated. But in my life, on that day in Gettysburg, I’m certain, when I needed Him most, I was wrapped in something stronger than bubble wrap—the loving arms of my Heavenly Father, working through His angels. And for that, I am forever grateful.
